Binary Browser 5.5

Binary Browser Editor's Review

Binary Browser is a hexadecimal editing software. Beside that, it provides a few useful tools for programmers and web developers. These tools include a binary comparer, a REGEX finder, and a special structure reader. The structure reader enables you to read a portion of a file that should have a specific order of bytes. For example, you could use this program to display a BMP file's header, RGB codes, or UNICODE strings.

The Tools menu seems to be the most important. The program's features are accessible through this menu. I compared a 4MB file with a short text document and it took about 5 seconds. This is ok, considering the size of the big file. The different sections in the two files are highlighted. However, it's impossible to select more than one hexadecimal digit from any file that you previously had opened.

Pluses:

Drawbacks / flaws: The open file dialog doesn't work. The only way to open a file is to drag and drop it onto the main window. The whole user interface looks bad. When I opened the program, I felt like I was working on Windows 3.1. Another thing I don't like is that the program stops responding and even closes itself from time to time. Finally, I want to say that I think this software isn't worth $80.

In conclusion: I guess the authors of this application thought that they shouldn't provide an easy to use interface because Binary Browser is designed for programmers. In my opinion this is wrong.
